A Hundred Tones of Green
by J. Randal Matheny © 2015
A hundred tones of green —
from pale, new buds of growth,
to darkened, aged leaves —
declare the path is long,
and progress often slow.
The limbs of seasons past
do not upbraid the shoots
for lack of ripened fruit,
but rejoice that roots and trunk
produce new life in the tree.
The greens of new and old
provide a richer view
of foliage reaching outward,
of glory in the sun,
with seeds from start to end.
