Building a Solid House

Posted by: Asn <Asn@...>

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." Matthew 7: 24-27

You wouldn't erect a physical house without first laying a solid foundation, would you?  Of course not.  If you did, the house would be structurally unsound. But what about our spiritual "house?"  Is the foundation of my spiritual life firmly established on God's word, or is it "tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching" that travels over the airwaves or across the internet? (Ephesians 4:14NIV)  Don't get me wrong; there are some good things being shared on the data waves, but much of what is spoken is half-truth at best.  Let's not "be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth." (Ephesians 4:14b NIV)  Any doctrine that doesn't agree with the Bible is false.

Are there cracks in our emotional "house?"  If so, it might be good to check the foundation.  While it's true that we all have a need to be loved, if the core of our emotional wellbeing is rooted in the opinions of others, we are nestled on shaky ground.  Why should we give fallible humans that much control over our sense of contentment when Jesus Christ is our Prince of Peace? (Isaiah 9:6)

Finally, what about our financial "house?"  The principle of tithing spans the Bible from Genesis to Hebrews.  I've seen it in my own life and I've heard countless others testify to the goodness of God when they dared to step out and tithe.  God is faithful when we obey His word.

There are many winds blowing today.  May the melody of our hearts join the refrain:  "On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand; All other ground is sinking sand."  (by Edward Mote, circa 1834  http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/m/y/myhopeis.htm)
