WHAT'S UP IN THE NEXT ISSUE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here it is, June 1! I wanted to remind you that since the
Hope Chest is now bi-monthly, your next regular issue
will come out around July 4, instead of today! At the end
of this month, I will fly to Maryland with Naomi for four days
to see my family. (Most of them haven't seen baby yet!)
My grandmother is coming in from Colorado, and we will
celebrate her 92nd birthday!
The next issue's theme is Tackling the Trouble Spots.
I'm working on an article about teaching reluctant writers.
I know that's a hard one for so many families -- including mine!
I'd LOVE to hear from all of you about what you do when you hit
a snag in home schooling. I would also like to hear ideas for
neat summer activities to keep our children's brains busy
without being "schoolish"! I NEED YOUR HELP!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FEELING BLUE?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most of you have probably finished up school for the summer.
I'm not sure how you all feel at the end of the year, but we
often go out "with a whimper instead of a bang!" One day
last week I felt SO down in the dumps! I sure felt like calling
it quits on home schooling, and not just for the summer!
I cried for hours. Then I went to bed early and the next morning
I woke up cheerful again. I don't quite know what hit me, but I'm
sure it was a combination of lack of sleep, a head cold,
hormones and letting things get out of control around the
house. Do you ever feel like this? When I am in the middle
of a pity party, it feels like I will always be there, that there is
no hope, that we are stuck in failure. I try to remind myself
that this is temporary. I will feel better soon. I will find
solutions to what is bothering me. My children will grow up.
So I need to smile, give hugs, speak sweetly, apologize for
my misbehavior and gently correct them for theirs. I need
to get up and keep moving and focus on what I CAN do
instead of what I CAN'T. I'll try to write more about this in the
next issue, but I just wanted to offer a word of encouragement
to any of you who don't feel you can go a step farther. Ask
God for wisdom. Count it all joy. Persevere. You will be
rewarded. (See James 1!)
NEWS ABOUT BOOKS AND OTHER RESOURCES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The full resource catalog is at the end of this message,
but I wanted to mention a few things up here!

I now have in stock several copies of Cindy Rushton's new
book, Inspiring Your Children to Greatness Through Great
Literature. They are $12 plus $2.50 shipping (and 7% tax for
FL residents). Let me know if you would like to order one!

I have a slightly damaged copy of Nature Study the Easy Way
by Cindy Rushton. The back cover has a bent spot at the
bottom. It usually sells for $25, but the "scratch-n-dent"
price is $22. If you want it, e-mail me and I'll reserve it for
you! This is a MARVELOUS book for summer time! I also
have one other copy of it for those who like theirs in pristine
condition!

Also new to the lineup (but in VERY limited quantities) are
some audio tapes!
Peace for the Stressed Out Home School Mom
by Pastor Reb Bradley (2 copies available)
Teaching Your Children to Love One Another
by Bev Bradley (2 copies available)
These are $6 each postage paid. If you are ordering other
resources at the same time, the price is $5. I am looking into
being able to carry these tapes and others by the Bradleys
on a regular basis. I'll keep you posted!

I am still trying to decide whether to take the last little push
and publish Volume 4 of The Best of the Hope Chest.
This would include issues 31-40. Can I have some
feedback on who would be interested? Volume 4 has these
topics in it: Just for Fun, Interviews (Christine Field, Joyce
McPherson, Timberdoodle, Dr. Jay Wile,), Science, Choosing
Curriculum, Resource Reviews, American Heritage,
Government, Australia, the Olympics, Health, Handling
the Tough Times & Transitions, Poetry, Unit Studies,
Thankfulness, Christmas, Old and New, and Be an Overcomer!

VIRUS HOAX (SULFNBK.EXE)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have received an e-mail from someone about a virus
that installs a file on your computer called SULFNBK.EXE,
which will supposedly eat your computer on June 1, it
is a hoax. Do not delete the file. It is used by your computer.
You won't die without it, but your computer does use it
sometimes. It has to do with the length of file names or
something like that.
Before you ever forward a virus warning or do anything to
your computer, please check it out at:
GATEWAY TO LEARNING BILL VETO!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Good news in Florida from Brenda Dickinson of the Home
Education Foundation! (But if you live elsewhere,
read it anyway! It may happen in your state!) THANK YOU
to those who responded to our pleas to contact the Governor
about this invasive bill! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Dear Leaders,

We are thrilled to report that late last night, Gov. Bush vetoed SB
1018. This action is a testimony to his desire to allow parents to
direct the education of their children without unnecessary government
intrusion. The decision did not come easily, for the Governor received
input from many, many groups. The process went well into the night, and
the bill was vetoed quite late. The issue of helping parents, of special
needs children, find and obtain necessary services is a valid one, and
there are other pieces of legislation that will aide them in this need.

Your phone calls, letters, and emails made a difference! From a humble
beginning of just 30 responses, we've heard estimates of a jump to over
900 in just a few days. Our letters of appreciation are just as
important as our letters of appeal, so please take a moment to thank him
for hearing your concerns and for the decision that he made.

In your service,
Brenda
