Making a Change

Posted by: Asn <Asn@...>

Remember that New Year's resolution you made three months ago?  How are you doing with that?  Has your resolution lost its resolve?  Maybe you've completely given up on making them in the first place because they seem so impossible to accomplish.  Whether it was a resolution or not, if there is a change you want to make in your life, I have a couple of thoughts that might be helpful.

1. What is your compelling motivation?  Typically, "I should," "I have to," or "I need to" are not nearly as compelling as "I choose to."  Reasons based on negative self-talk tend to undermine the process; positive ones compel.

2. Define success.  What does it look like for you?  A number on a scale, for example, is much too small of a thing to live for.  Dig deeper.  Dare to dream.

3. What will the journey look like?  You've heard it before: People don't plan to fail; they fail to plan.  Take time to think through how you'll get there, including rewards and consequences when appropriate.

4. What small step can you take today? The cliché still rings true – The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.  Just as in Aesop's fable of The Tortoise and the Hare, giant leaps are exhausting and often derailing.  Small, consistent, persistent steps over time will get you to the finish line.

5. Think long term.  If this is something you've battled for a while, give yourself at least twice as much time as you think it "should" take to overcome.  Instead of three weeks or even three months, plan to stay on the journey for a year.  After all, you're making a lifestyle change.

6. Finally, grant yourself grace.  Don't beat yourself up if you slip up occasionally.  Celebrate the "little" victories.  You might just find that your pace gets a little quicker when you enjoy the journey.
