SENT FOR BREAD
by J. Randal Matheny

I went for bread this morning at the store,
And bought six tiny loaves she asked, no more.
Across the counter they came, hot from the stove;
I looked away from the baker's sweets I love.
I toted the twisted sack to pay the clerk
(Whose presence in that shop was merely work),
And fed her the ticket and coins for a fast escape,
To avoid the charms of the eclair and shameless crepe.
As I sped away the yeasted air pursued,
But I raced back home, six loaves my limit of food.
