Ruth 1:1

THE HOUR OF DECISION

#1 of 4 in a Series on Ruth

We go through life making decisions.  Every day is a day of decision. Today you decided what you were going to eat for breakfast, what clothes you would wear, and with whom you would spend time. This week you will make decisions that will effect where you go, what you do, and how you use the abilities that God has given you.

There are times in our lives when major decisions must be made.  These decisions, being major, cause us to stop and think before we make a decision.  When we come to the point of making such a serious choice, I think of it as "The Hour of Decision" (with apologies to Billy Graham!) The hour of decision is a time in my life where I will end up being blessed or not so blessed based on the choice I make.  Such major hours of decision include, choosing a marriage partner, making a career move, selecting a church to join, or choosing a standard of morals by which I will conduct my life.

In Ruth 1 we meet four people who came to "The Hour of Decision".  Two of them made wise decisions. Two of them made unwise decisions.  Their choices are important to us because we will be forced to make the same types of decisions today.

BACKGROUND TO THE BOOK OF RUTH

Probably written in the days of David.

Events of this book might have taken place during the time of Gideon.

Ruth 1:1 tells us that it was during the days that the Judges ruled that these events took place. These were not good days, as Judges 2:11-19 indicates.

THE HOUR OF DECISION FOR ELIMELECH - HE CHOSE TO RETREAT - Vss. 1-5

Vs. 1 - It was a time of famine. It was a time of judgment from God. The land was dry and not producing. People were hungry. Elimelech had a decision to make. He was in the land that God had given the Jewish people. He could stay in the land and endure God's discipline, or he could leave and seek blessing elsewhere.  Abraham faced a similar decision in Genesis 12:10-20 and made the same wrong choice.

I feel Elimelech was wrong to leave Israel. The Israelites had been commanded to have nothing to do with Children of Moab.

Elimelech reminds me of what I would call a backsliding Christian. There was a time when they were on fire, in the right place, excited, and enthused about the work of Jesus Christ. Then, they chose to stop walking with the Lord and serving Him the way they once did. Those who backslide should not be surprised when they receive God's discipline as described in Hebrews 12:5.  In Ruth 1:3-5 we find God's judgment on Elimelech and his family.

THE HOUR OF DECISION FOR NAOMI - SHE CHOSE TO RETURN - Vss. 6-7

Here is the story of a backslider who did all the things that her husband did, but came back to the Lord. She heard that God's people were being blessed, and decided to return to Israel.  It is a good thing when a backsliding Christian hears how God is blessing His people. It might influence him to repent.  The backsliding Christian needs to confess sin and return to the service of the King!

THE HOUR OF DECISION FOR ORPAH - Vss. 8-14 - SHE CHOSE TO REJECT

Orpah looked good. She was following her mother-in-law back to Israel. Instead of staying to worship false Gods, she was going to come into the land of Israel and worship the God of Israel.

Orpah reminds me of many a person I have met who claims to have trusted Jesus Christ as Savior.

They start out right by making a profession of faith, but go no further. Their lives showed no change. 2 Corinthians 5:17

Vss. 8-13 - Naomi explains the truth. She gives the cold, hard facts. Orpah decided that the cost of following Naomi was too high.  When professing Christians who never truly trusted Christ lean of the required commitment to Christ, they reject their new found faith (If not in word, they do it by deed.)  Matthew 13:20-21

Vs. 14 - Orpah kissed her mother-in-law and left. She rejected Naomi and her God.

THE HOUR OF DECISION FOR RUTH - Vss. 14-18 - SHE CHOSE TO RELY

When Orpah left Naomi, Ruth clung to her.  Ruth gives us an example of a person who is truly born again. She would not be dissuaded from her faith and made a total commitment to Naomi and her God.  Seeing her sincerity, Naomi stopped trying to dissuade Ruth. Ruth chose to rely on God.  The true Christian chooses to rely by faith on Christ!

Matthew 11:28-30

THE MESSAGE OF THE CHURCH

There are many different "churches" today. Many of them are true representatives for the Lord Jesus Christ. Many are not. The true church is made up of all those who have been truly born again by the Spirit of God.  The local church should also be made up of true believers that try to get out the message of Christ to the community.

Different churches have different messages.  But the true churches are those who are giving out the message which God wants the world to hear.

We need to remember that God owns the church.  God the Son is the head of that church! Please see Matthew 16:18, Ephesians 1:22-23, Ephesians 5:23 and Colossians 1:18.

The church belongs to Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the head of the church.

Therefore, the message of the church should be the message of Christ.

The message that you and I as Christians have for the world is the message that Christ has for the world.

This message is expressed in many different passages. The most familiar passage is John 3:16.

Another passage that shows Christ's message (And, therefore, the church's message.) is Matthew 11:28-30.

HIS INVITATION

1. "COME UNTO ME."

2. "TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU"

3. "LEARN OF ME"

HIS INVITED

Just who is Jesus inviting? Those who "labor and are heavy laden".

A verse which further elaborates on who these people is Luke 4:18.

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,"

HIS INVOLVEMENT

"I will give you rest."

"Ye shall find rest unto your souls."

This is because His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

Let's make sure that our churches are giving out the message of the owner, the Lord Jesus Christ.

REMEMBER!

·       Name some of the holidays that cause us to remember various people and events.

·       Why is it important for us to remember what God has done for us?

·       Why is it important for us to remember the responsibilities that we have before God?

·       Why does God give us reminders in Scripture?

We want to examine the Scriptures to find the word “remember”, and see what some of the things are that God does not want us to forget.

REMEMBER THE SABBATH
Exodus 20:8 - Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. See Exodus 20:8-11

Deuteronomy 5:15 - And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

REMEMBER YOUR CREATOR

Ecclesiastes 12:1 - Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

REMEMBER THE PAST

Isaiah 46:9 - Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

Ephesians 2:11-13 - Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE

Luke 17:32 - Remember Lot's wife. – See Luke 17:27-33

REMEMBER JESUS’ WORDS

John 15:20 - Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. – See John 15:7, Colossians 3:16

REMEMBER GOD’S WORKS

Matthew 16:9 - Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

1 Chronicles 16:12 - Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

REMEMBER THE RESURRECTION

2 Timothy 2:8 - Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

REMEMBER SUFFERING BELIEVERS

Hebrews 13:3 - Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

REMEMBER YOUR LEADERS

Hebrews 13:7 - Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

REMEMBER YOUR SINS

Revelation 2:5 - Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

REMEMBER WHAT YOU’VE HEARD

Revelation 3:3 - Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

TAKE A HIKE!

NOTE - The idea and most of the main points of this message (slightly reworded by me) came from an essay written by Vance Havner. It was included in "Pleasant Paths", published by Fleming H. Revel (New York), with a 1945 copyright. The information I refer to is found on page 7.

What are you and/or others doing to make themselves happy this weekend?  Some are hiking on the Appalachian Trail or other trails.  The Appalachian Trail runs from Maine to Georgia.  The idea for such a trail was instituted in the 1920’s and came to fruition in the 1930’s. Such trails invite us to “Take a hike!”

GOD WANTS YOU TO BE HAPPY!

GOD WANTS YOU TO BE HAPPY IN HIM!

TO BE HAPPY, TAKE A HIKE!

The word “path” in the Scriptures invites us to take a hike to true happiness found in God alone.

TAKE A HIKE:

ON THE OLD PATH

Jeremiah 6:16 - Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

THE OLD PATH OF SALVATION

THE OLD PATH OF HOLINESS

THE OLD PATH OF TRUST

THE OLD PATH OF OBEDIENCE

ON THE LIVING PATH

Psalms 16:11 - Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John 10:10 - The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Nehemiah 8:10 - …for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

John 15:4-5, 7 – There are joys in being productive and receiving answered prayer.

John 15:8 – There is joy in glorifying God.

John 15:9-10 – There are joys in being loved by God and in obedience. See John 15:12 for the

command to love others as Jesus loved us.

John 15:11 – We will receive the fully permanent joy of Christ as we practice John 15:1-10.

ON THE RIGHTEOUS PATH

Psalms 23:3 - He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

ON THE PLAIN (level) PATHS

Psalms 27:11 - Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

Psalms 139:7-10 - Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me
.

ON SCRIPTURAL PATHS

Psalms 119:35 - Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

Psalms 119:105 - Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Jeremiah 15:16 - Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

ON THE DIRECTED (straight) PATH

Proverbs 3:6 - In all thy ways acknowledge him, and …

Psalms 32:8 - I will instruct thee and teach thee …

ON THE SHINING PATH

Proverbs 4:18 - But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
