Ruth 4 - THE HOUR OF REDEMPTION

#4 or 4 in the series on Ruth

Naomi had a piece of property that needed to be redeemed.  With the redemption of the property came the responsibility of marrying Ruth. See Leviticus 25:23-28 and Deuteronomy 25:5-9.

Boaz, as kinsman redeemer was:

READY TO REDEEM - Vss. 1-3

Boaz took the initiative to settle the matter. He was in line to be a kinsman-redeemer, but could not do it until a nearer kinsman relinquished his rights. Great works for God never get accomplished until someone is ready to take the first step.

ABLE TO REDEEM - Vss. 4-6

Boaz approached the man about the business at hand. Right away the man wanted the property.  But to go with the property was marriage to Ruth.  The one who redeemed the property needed also to father a child as an heir to the dead.  The other man was not able to do this without doing harm to his own inheritance. He gave Boaz permission to redeem the land and marry Ruth. Boaz was able to meet the requirements for redemption.

WILLING TO REDEEM - Vss. 7-17

Boaz was not only able to redeem the property and marry Ruth, but he was willing! His willingness was reflected in the actions that he took. Many times people have ability, but are not willing to act.

Boaz was READY, WILLING AND ABLE!

Now think of our Lord Jesus as our redeemer.

JESUS WAS READY TO REDEEM - He came to earth to die for our sins.

JESUS WAS ABLE TO REDEEM - He had no sin of his own. No man was able to redeem us from our sins, but Jesus was able. 2 Corinthians 5:21

JESUS WAS WILLING TO REDEEM - He showed his willingness to obey the Father's will in Gethsemane. He also showed His willingness to redeem us by suffering all the pain leading up to the cross and actually going to the cross.

JESUS WAS READY, WILL AND ABLE TO REDEEM US! PRAISE GOD!

2 SAMUEL 6

GETTING IT RIGHT

DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART LESSON #11

·       It is a right thing for legal hunters to hunt buck.  What are some of the wrong things people do in hunting, even though they are doing the right thing?

·       It is a right thing to shop.  What are some of the wrong ways people shop while doing a right thing?

·       It is right to witness for Christ. What are some of the wrong ways people witness while trying to do a right thing?

In the first five chapters of 2 Kings David is seen establishing a united kingdom.  Once the kingdom was united, David wanted to bring the “Ark of the Covenant” “home”.  He was trying to do a right thing but tried to do it in the wrong way. We can relate to David, because we often do the same thing. Our motives are often right and our methods are often lacking.  In 2 Samuel, we learn from David how to “get it right” after we have made mistakes. There are five lessons we learn here about “getting it right”.

HAVE GOOD INTENTIONS – Vss. 1-2

·       Chuck Swindoll - "The name itself means 'box' or 'chest.' God himself gave the original blueprint to Moses. The ark was made of wood, rectangular in shape, gold-plated inside and out. It had a decorative gold border around it, forming a rim.                                                                                Another significant part of the ark was its cover. On top of this open chest was a grate, a see-though covering made of gold, called the mercy seat. It perfectly matched the dimensions of the chest. At either end of the cover was a hammered gold cherubim… These golden angels were facing each other, with wings outstretched over the golden grate. These creatures looked down upon the chest. Apparently these cherubim were small because a solid gold piece would be extremely heavy.  If they had been very large they would have made the ark top heavy. It would be awkward to carry it. The whole thing had to be mobile.                                                                                                                         "…Beneath the place within the ark were three objects: a golden jar containing manna from the wilderness, Aaron's ancient rod, and the tables of the covenant, that is, the tablets of stone.  God had promised that He would meet with His people above the mercy seat."  Charles R. Swindoll, A Man of Passion and Destiny, David, © 1997 by Charles R. Swindoll, Word Publishing Inc., Dallas TX, Page 147

·       The Ark of the Covenant was the place where God chose to place His presence in a tangible form on earth.  It was to be kept in the "Holy of Holies" in the tabernacle or temple.

·       Years before the Philistines had captured the Ark, but returned it in a few months.  They put it on a new cart, had a couple of cattle pull it, and sent it back to Israel.  Eventually it was brought to the house of a man named Abinadab, and remained there for many years.

·       David decided that it was time to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the capital city and the place where the Ark should have been.

·       Why are good intentions good, especially when they center on loving and serving the Lord?                 See Deuteronomy 6:4-5.

·       What are some of the things Christians should have good intentions about?

THINK BEFORE YOU ACT – Vss. 3-5

·       Why is it always best to “do it right the first time?”

·       What should be done before we try to do anything for the Lord?

·       Vs. 3 – They loaded the ark on a new cart, just like the Philistines had done.  What was wrong with that?  Why should we be careful not to always do things the same way “the world” does?

·       The ark was supposed to be carried by the Levites. Exodus 37:3-5, Numbers 3:29-31, 7:9

·       Many people, even Christians, think that the end justifies the means.  That is, it doesn't matter how I get something done, as long as I get it done.  Why is this not true? Colossians 3:17

·       Vss. 5 – Notice that even a “praise band” did not change the fact that they were doing things improperly.  In many cases doing what is wrong negates what we are doing that is right.

DON’T TAKE GOD LIGHTLY – Vss. 6-10

·       Vss. 6-7 - Uzzah had done what was wrong. Nobody was to touch the ark except those who would move it in the proper way.

·       Why do you feel that God was so severe in his judgment of Uzzah?

·       In what ways do Christians sometimes treat the things of God lightly or irreverently?

·       What should we do when we realize that we have treated the things of God lightly or irreverently?

·       Vss. 8-10 – Why was David angry? How did this event make David look before Israel?

·       Why was David justifiably afraid? Proverbs 9:10

·       David was wise to move the ark to a safe place before trying to proceed to Jerusalem. Why?

TRY AGAIN – Vss. 11-15

·       Vs. 11 - What does the prosperity of Obed-edom and his family tell you about their treatment of the ark?

·       Vs. 12 - What does this verse tell you about God’s dealings with David over the 3 month interval that occurred between attempts to move the ark?

·       David had done his homework and went about bringing the ark to Jerusalem in the right way. See 1 Chronicles 15:11-14

·       Vs. 13 – It seems that David is trying to do it right this time.

·       Vss. 14-15 – What does David teach us about worship?

·       What does David teach us about trying again?

EXPECT CRITICISM – Vss. 16-23

·       Whenever we try to do what is right there is bound to be some form of opposition.                                    Psalm 34:19, 2 Timothy 3:12

·       David was not dressed like a king when he moved the ark.

·       David’s wife, Michal, saw David’s behavior before the Lord, and despised him.

·       Vss. 17-19 – David worshipped, offered sacrifices, blessed the people, and shared food.

·       Why was having the ark in Jerusalem such a day of joy?

·       Vs. 20 – What does this verse teach us about times of joy in the Lord?

·       Vss. 21-22 – Was David’s reaction justified and accurate?

·       Vs. 23 – Why was Michal judged so severely?

·       What final conclusions can we reach concerning doing the right things the wrong way?

Romans 16:1-16

GOD’S NOBODIES ARE SOMEBODIES

·       How would you define a person who is a “nobody”?

·       Have you ever felt like you were a “nobody”?  How does that feel?

·       Do you think that any Christian is really a “nobody”?  Why?

In Romans 16:1-16 we have a list of people who were greeted by the Apostle Paul as he finished the letter to the Romans. There are people who Paul knew and loved, and who were fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.  We do not know much about these people, who might be considered by most a list of nobodies.  However, like us today, although these people may appear to be insignificant, they are not.  What can we learn about being a nobody from these people?

THEY WERE INDIVIDUALS

·       Each one of these were a name, not a number. They were important to someone.

·       Each one of them was created by God.                                                                                    Psalms 139:14 - I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

·       Each one of them was unique from the other. Even identical twins are not identical.

·       Each one was an individual, whose name was written out not only in the Bible, but in the Lamb’s Book of life.                                                                                                   Philippians 4:3 - ... and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.                                                                                                                                                  Luke 10:20 - Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. Also see Revelation 21:27.

·       Each one was an individual who was “accepted in the beloved”.                                       Ephesians 1:5-6 - Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

THEY WERE IMPORTANT

·       Each person was a child of God.                                                                                                          John 1:12 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

·       Each person had realms of influence such as work, business, home, school, church etc. Matthew 5:16 - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

·       Each person was a part of the body of Christ.                                                                                1 Corinthians 12:13 - For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

·       Each person had a Spiritual gift to be used for God’s glory.                                                   1 Peter 4:10-11 - As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

·       Each person had been called to do good works.                                                                      Ephesians 2:10 - For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

·       Each person had been called to do their best.                                                                         Colossians 3:17 - And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Colossians 3:23 - And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

THEY WERE IMMORTAL

·       They had everlasting life.                                                                                                             John 3:14-15 - And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

·       They would ever be with the Lord.                                                                                                           1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 - For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

·       They were citizens of the New Jerusalem.                                                                            Revelation 21:1-8 - And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
