2 SAMUEL 9

A PICTURE OF GOD’S GRACE

DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART - LESSON #13

(This is a previously shared outline formatted into a Sunday School Class Lesson

·       What is a “grace period”?  Why are they helpful?  What are the problems with grace periods?

·       What are some ways we can be gracious to others?

·       How have people been gracious to you lately?

·       How has God been gracious to you?

·       What would be a good Biblical definition of grace?

·       What’s so amazing about God’s grace?

In 2 Kings 9 we see David showing “grace” to his friend Jonathan’s Son, and his enemy Saul’s grandson. The way David treated Mephibosheth is a picture of God showing grace to us.

HE WAS SEPARATED

·       It was common practice in Bible times for kings who had taken over after the demise of another ruling family to eliminate any possible “heirs” to the throne.  Relatives, especially sons, of the former king were often killed.

·       When David took over the Kingdom there was at least one relative around. He was Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth. 2 Samuel 4:4

·       Mephibosheth was hidden in a secluded place called Lo-Debar.

·       As he grew up Mephibosheth was probably taught who he was and why he had to hide.

·       From what good things was Mephibosheth separated?

·       How is a person’s separation from God a more serious issue than Mephibosheth’s separation from society?  Isaiah 64:6, Isaiah 59:2, Ezekiel 18:4, Romans 6:23

·       How would you try to persuade someone that he or she is a sinner?

HE WAS SOUGHT - Vss. 1-5

·       Vs. 1 – What caused David to make an inquiry concerning Saul’s family?                               1 Samuel 20:14-17

·       Vss. 2-4 – David made inquiries of Ziba, a former servant of Saul. He got the information that he needed.

·       Vs. 5 – David sent for Mephibosheth.

·       Mephibosheth was not looking for David.  Generally speaking, man does not search for God. Romans 3:10-11

·       God sent His son to earth seeking our salvation.                                                                                      Luke 19:10, 1 John 4:10, 2 Corinthians 5:21

·       Today God sends his Holy Spirit to earth seeking sinners. John 16:8-11

·       This is pictured in the parable of the Lost Coin. Luke 15:8-10

·       Also today the Lord Jesus has sent us to reach the lost with the Gospel message.                 Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8

HE WAS SAVED - Vss. 6-13

·       Vs. 6 – What do you think Mephibosheth was thinking when he was brought from his home to face David?

·       Vs. 7 – Mephibosheth would receive his grandfather’s property and would sit at the King’s table.

·       How does this treatment of Mephibosheth picture God’s grace to us?

·       Vs. 8 – Why was Mephibosheth so amazed?

·       What did Mephibosheth do to earn this?  This reminds us of our own salvation by God’s grace. John 3:16, Titus 3:5

HE WAS A SON - Vss. 7, 13

·       Vs. 9-13 – Ziba was given the word. He and his sons were now servants of Mephibosheth.  Saul’s property was given to his grandson.

·       Mephibosheth would eat at the King’s table as if he were a son.

·       God in His grace has made each person who comes to Christ as Savior a son.

·       We are sons by birth.                                                                                                                     John 1:12-13 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

·       We have been adopted into the family of God.                                                                             Romans 8:15-18 (NASB77) - For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

·       What is the significance of us being the sons of God?

Psalm 119 – Selected Verses

THE CRY OF MY HEART!

Sometimes we cry out from deep within our hearts.  Some of the things that we cry out from the heart include:

Help!

Forgive Me!

I’m sorry!

I love you!

I miss you!

Sometimes we cry out to God as David did in Psalm 119.  7 times David cries to God, “Teach me thy statutes!”  This is a good cry for us to give from our hearts.  David shares 6 reasons for this cry.

BECAUSE YOU ARE GOD – TEACH ME THY STATUTES!

Psalms 119:12 - Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.

Romans 11:33-36 -  O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

BECAUSE YOU HAVE FORGIVEN ME – TEACH ME THY STATUTES!
Psalms 119:26 - I have declared my ways, and thou heardest me: teach me thy statutes.

Psalms 32:1-2 - Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

Psalms 32:5 - I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

Also consider Psalm 51:7 and 1 John 1:9.

BECAUSE I WANT TO OBEY YOU – TEACH ME THY STATUES!
Psalms 119:33-34 - Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

Psalms 119:145 - I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O LORD: I will keep thy statutes.

BECAUSE YOU LOVE ME – TEACH ME THY STATUTES!
Psalms 119:64 - The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.

Psalms 119:124 - Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes.

The word “mercy” is often translated “love, steadfast love, or lovingkindness”.

BECAUSE YOU ARE GOOD – TEACH ME THY STATUES!

Psalms 119:68 - Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.

Psalms 145:9 - The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

BECAUSE I WANT YOUR APPROVAL – TEACH ME THY STATUTES!
Psalms 119:135 - Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.

Job 1:8 - And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

TEACH ME THY STATUTES

•         BECAUSE YOU ARE GOD

•         BECAUSE YOU HAVE FORGIVEN ME

•         BECAUSE I WANT TO OBEY YOU

•         BECAUSE YOU LOVE ME

•         BECAUSE YOU ARE GOOD

•         BECAUSE I WANT YOUR APPROVAL

 REVELATION 13

GENUINE COUNTERFEITS

THE BACK OF THE BOOK #12

·        Over the years counterfeit Christianity has taken many forms.  Can you name some of them?

·        The ultimate counterfeit to Christianity will take place during the Tribulation.

·        There will be an “unholy trinity”, masterminded by Satan himself.  This threesome will deceive those who are not saved.

·        The “unholy trinity” will consist of the dragon (Satan), the Antichrist, and the False Prophet.

·        After being introduced to the dragon in Revelation 12, we now meet the other two members of this group.  They are counterfeiting the work of God’s Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit

THE FIRST BEAST – THE ANTICHRIST – Vss. 1-10

1. HIS POWER – Vs. 1-3

·        Vs. 1 – The “sea” could refer to the Gentile nations, or the “bottomless pit”.  Revelation 11:7, 17:8

·        It is apparent that the Antichrist will be demonically controlled. He will be strongly influenced by Satan.

·        The “beast” definitely refers to a person, and probably to the kingdom he will rule.  It is hard to separate, in our thinking, a powerful king from his kingdom.

·        “…those seven heads represent seven successive world empires: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, and Antichrist’s final world kingdom.” John MacArthur, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary, Revelation 12-22,, (Chicago, Moody Press, 1999), p. 43

·        The ten horns are representative of the “revived Roman empire”, of which the Antichrist will be the head.

·        This will be the most blasphemous kingdom that ever existed.

·        Vs. 2 – Daniel gives us a similar description in Daniel 7:3-7.  This kingdom will have the qualities of Babylon (lion), Medo-Persia (bear), and Greece (leopard).

·        Vs. 3 – Satan will evidently pull off the great deception of the Antichrist dying and coming back to life. This will cause the world to be in awe of the beast.

2. HIS PRAISE – Vss. 4, 8

·        Satan desires to be worshipped. Isaiah 14:13-14, Matthew 4:9-10

·        He will get his wish as both he and the dragon receive homage from those who are unsaved.  They will declare that there is none like him.

·        It is encouraging to note that true Christians will not bow down to worship the Antichrist, and that their names are securely written in “the Lamb’s Book of Life”.

3. HIS PERVERSITY – Vss. 5-7

·        Vs. 5 - Although Antichrist will be on the scene for the whole Tribulation, the last three and a half years will be when he is most ruthless.

·        It is encouraging to note that the Antichrist has a limited time frame in which to work.

·        Vss. 5-6 – Like most dictators, the Antichrist will have a mouth and know how to use it!  He will blaspheme publicly and outrageously against God, God’s name, God’s tabernacle (Heaven), and those that dwell in Heaven.

·        Vs. 7 - Antichrist will have power given to him to “make war with the saints, and to overcome them”.

·        His reign during the last half of the Tribulation will be worldwide.

4. THE PERSEVERANCE (OF THE SAINTS) – VSS. 9-10

·        The instructions given here actually are encouragement to the Tribulation saints to persevere.

·        They were to persevere through imprisonment or death. James 1:2-8, 1 Peter 4:14

·        Such perseverance is only possible through faith. Hebrews 11:6

THE SECOND BEAST – THE FALSE PROPHET – Vss. 11-18

1. HE WILL BE DYNAMIC – Vss. 11-13

·        Vs. 11 - The False Prophet will be the spokesman for the Antichrist.  He will not come out of the raging sea, but the earth.  Some think this will make him to be milder in his approach.

·        He had 2 horns, which represent power.  Although he will have some power, he will not have the same power as Christ, who is referred to as having seven horns in Revelation 5:6.

·        He will appear to be meek like a lamb, but with the mouth of a dragon, he will be a formidable foe.

·        Vs. 12 – The False Prophet’s power will be up to par with the Antichrist. His purpose will be to cause people to worship the Antichrist.

·        Vs. 13 – Because the False Prophet is a counterfeit, he will try to do the same things God does through his servants.  He will bring fire down from Heaven like God’s two witnesses.

      Revelation 11:5

2. HE WILL BE DECEPTIVE – Vss. 14-15

·        By using many deceptive signs and wonders the False Prophet will influence the world to make an image of the Antichrist which will be worshipped.

·        This very possibly is the “Abomination of Desolation” that Daniel refers to in Daniel 9:27.

      Matthew 24:15

·        Somehow the image that is made will be given “life” by the False Prophet.  We are not sure how this will be accomplished, but it will be a reason for worshipping the beast.

·        Whoever does not worship the image will be sentenced to death.

3. HE WILL BE DEMANDING – Vss. 16-18

·        Vs. 16 – Each person will be required to receive the “mark of the beast” in his right hand or forehead. Could this be a computer chip?

·        Vs. 17 – No one will be able to buy or sell unless they have the proper identification.

·        Vs. 18 – The number of the Antichrist is “666”.

·        In the day that he appears people will be able to identify him, but any such attempt at identification is fruitless now.
