2 SAMUEL 18-19

RESTORED

                          

·        What are some of the things people restore?

·        How do you think it feels to be restored to a position after having lost it?

·        Why should we always seek to restore fellowship with God and fellow Christians after it has been lost?

 

With the approach of his son Absalom, David had to flee for his life.  Due to the counsel of Hushai, the plans of Ahithophel, Absalom’s counselor, were thwarted. David was able to flee and get his army established. This led to his restoration as King of Israel.

 

AN ARMY DEPLOYED – 18:1-5

        Vss. 1-2 – David wisely divided his army into three parts with appropriate leadership.  He was probably facing a larger force. Being able to attack on three different fronts against Absalom would have helped to cause confusion.

        David, as the king, planned on going out to battle with his soldiers.

        Vs. 3 – What was the reasoning of David’s men, and why was it correct?

        Vs. 4 – What quality of a good leader is displayed in this verse?  When should a leader follow the advice of those whom he is leading?

        Vs. 5 – What does this command by David tell you about his heart?  Why did David make this such a public command?

 

AN ENEMY DEFEATED – 18:6-30

·        Vss. 6-8 – The soldiers with David were obviously more familiar with the woods than Absalom’s forces.  The end result was a great victory.

·        Vs. 9 – Absalom got stuck in a tree and was helpless.

·        Vss. 10-11 – What type of person was Joab?

·        Vss. 12-13 – What wisdom is in this man’s answer?

·        Vss. 14-18 – Do you think Joab was right to kill Absalom?

·        With the death of Absalom the battle was over. Israel retreated. The rebellion was squashed.

·        Vss. 19-20 – Good men ran with good news. Ahimaaz was a good man, the son one of the high priests, and would be used to bring good news.  The King’s son was dead. It was time for someone else to bear the news to the king.

·        Vss. 21-30 – Cushi ran as an eyewitness. Ahimaaz ran but had no report.  What do these two men teach us about serving the Lord?

 

A KING DISTRESSED AND DIRECTED – 18:30-19:8

·        Vss. 31-32 – Notice that Cushi did not give a lot of detail.  He reported and answered questions simply.  He did not badmouth Absalom or report how he died.

·        Vs. 33 – David’s reaction is quite strong for a son who was so rebellious. What do you think caused this?

·        Vss. 1-4 – How did David’s grief affect the victory celebration?

·        Vss. 5-6 – What was Joab saying? Was he right?

·        Vs. 7 – Why was Joab’s advice good advice?

·        Vs. 8 – Why did the people need to see the king and hear an encouraging word from Him?

·        Remember that even in times of our own grief those who have stood with us need to hear words of gratitude and encouragement from us.

 

A RETURN DESCRIBED – 19:9-40

1.     Plans Were Made Vss. 9-18

·        Vss. 9-14 – Why did the king need to be “brought back”?

·        Why were Israel and Judah willing to bring back the king?

·        Vss. 15-18 – There was quite a welcoming committee.

 

2.     Shimei Was Pardoned – Vss. 18-23

·        Vss. 18-20 – Shimei had publicly cursed David when David had fled Jerusalem.  Now to protect his own life he had to come and seek a pardon.  Did he deserve one?

·        Vs. 21 - Why was Abishai so vindictive?

·        What was David’s reasoning on granting a temporary pardon? Later Solomon would bring justice on Shemei. He was punished, but not directly for his curse against David. 1 Kings 2:8-9,  36-46

3.     Mephibosheth Explained – Vss. 24-30

·        Ziba, Saul’s servant, had been very supportive of David.  He claimed that Mephibosheth was rebelling against David as David was running for his life. David had given him the property that had been given Mephibosheth. 2 Kings 18:1-4

·        Vs. 24 – Mephibosheth, in mourning for the king, did not care for himself until the king returned.

·        Vss. 25-28 – Mephibosheth told how he had been deceived and how appreciative he was to David.

·        Vs. 29 – If Mephibosheth’s story was true, why did David say the land should be divided?

·        Vs. 30 – What does the reaction of Mephibosheth teach us about commitment to Christ?

 

4.      A Supporter Was Rewarded – Vss. 31-40

·        Vss. 31-32 – Barzillai came to welcome back David. He was a man in his 80's that had supported David physically while David was in exile. He was a man of means.

·        Vss. 33-37 – David wanted to return the favor by caring for Barzillai till the day he died. Barzillai refused because he wanted to die at home. Instead he asked David to reward Chimham instead. He might have been a relative.

·        Vss. 38-40 – David concurred and took Chimham with him.

MARK 8:1-9

CONSIDER THE MULTITUDE

 

Our text begins, In those days the multitude being very great…

 

In fact we also read that the multitude was about 4,000 in number. According to Matthew, that number was just the men. Women and children were also there. Jesus had quite a number to consider. 

 

What did Jesus consider about this crowd?  He had compassion on them because they were hungry.

 

He also had compassion because they were shepherdless.

When Jesus fed the 5,000, we are told Mark 6:34 And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

The passage we just read tells us that Jesus again taught the crowd when he fed the 4,000.

 

He also had compassion on the crowd because they were sick.

Speaking of the same Miracle Matthew 15:30 says, And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:

 

So, Jesus' compassion on the multitude was more than just concerning their stomachs. He was concerned for their total well being. Jesus considered the multitude!

 

"Fine," you say. "But what does Jesus considering the multitude have to do with me?"

Glad you asked. J

 

Your life is filled with a multitude of people.

 

There's your family and friends.

There are your neighbors.

There are your fellow workers and school friends.

There are people you meet socially and in the world of business.

There are people who wait on you at the gas station and the store.

You know a multitude of people.  And just as Jesus considered the multitude, we need to consider the multitude as well.

 

The multitude you know has many needs. In a sense of the word they are starving.  Just as Jesus said to the disciples, I have compassion on the multitude and want to feed them, he is saying to you and I, "I have compassion on the multitude you know and want to feed them."

 

We probably answer the Lord the same way the disciples did, "Lord there are so many. We can't possibly feed them."

The disciples did end up feeding the multitude.  It was they who brought Jesus the 7 loaves and a few fishes, and it was they who took the food to the people.

 

For a few moments let's Consider the Multitude we know.

 

OUR RESPONSE

 

Erwin Lutzer said: "Regardless of how we define Christ’s separation from the world, one fact is clear: he did not separate himself from human beings and their needs. Nor did he limit his concern to the spiritual part of man’s personality."

 

We already saw that Jesus had compassion on the multitude.

He had compassion because they were lost - sheep without a shepherd.

He had compassion because they were sick.

He had compassion because they were hungry.

 

Look at the multitude around you.

 

Many of those you know are lost. They are sheep without a shepherd because they have never been brought to the Good Shepherd who gave His life for the sheep.

 

Many of those you know are hungry.  Some are literally hungry. Many are Spiritually hungry. Not just those without Christ are Spiritually hungry. But those with Christ are Spiritually hungry.

They need hope. They need help. They need forgiveness. They need encouragement.

 

Many of those you know, saved and unsaved, are literally sick. They need encouragement and help.

 

Shouldn't we have compassion on brothers and sisters in Christ who have physical needs? 

Shouldn't we have compassion on shut-ins and those in adult and nursing homes?  I am thankful for our ladies who are compassionate enough to make lap robes and place-mats for those in the homes around here.

 

John 4:35 - Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

 

OUR RESPONSIBILITY

 

Although Jesus worked the miracle, Jesus gave the responsibility of the work to the disciples.

 

We are responsible to witness. 1 Peter 3:15

 

We are responsible to be sympathetic to others. Romans 12:15

 

We are responsible to encourage other Christians. Hebrews 10:24-25

 

We are responsible to meet the physical needs of others. In fact our treatment of others is a proof of our own salvation.

Matthew 25:31-40

 

OUR RESOURCES

 

In Verse 5 Jesus asks, How many loaves have ye?

In other words, Jesus is saying, "Consider your resources!"

It was discovered that they had seven loaves and a few SMALL fishes.

 

They didn't have much but they had something that was to be given to Him to use to feed the multitude.

 

My friend, the God that wants you to have compassion on the multitude and the God who tells you to reach out to the multitude, is the same God who has given you resources to do what he wants you to do.

 

The disciples had 7 loaves as a resource. Let me suggest to you that God has given you at least 7 "loaves" as a resource to reach the multitude.

 

·        Loaf #1 is a tongue.

 

Now I realize that this is pretty basic and pretty obvious, but no matter how shy you may be, God has given you a tongue, and you know how to use it!

God has given you the physical ability to communicate your faith.

God has given you the physical ability to encourage other Christians.

God has given you the physical ability.

All you have to do is use it!

 

You might be thinking, "How will I ever overcome my shyness, or my backward speech?" That leads to loaf #2!

 

·        LOAF #2 IS THE HOLY SPIRIT

 

Romans 8:9 - But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

 

God, the Holy Spirit lives inside of you.

In reaching the multitudes, what is the thing we need more than anything else?  It is power!  That's what the Holy Spirit provides! Acts 1:8

 

We can not measure the effectiveness of our witness by the number of people who make profession of faith.  A better measure of our effectiveness is the amount of conviction that comes on people.

 

Jesus, Paul and Peter did not see every person they talked to come to salvation.  But even those who didn't were convicted.

Sometimes conviction results in anger and even persecution of the person being convicted.

By the way, it is the Holy Spirit that gives us the ability to reach out to the multitudes in other ways.

 

It is the Holy Spirit that provides the fruit that allows us to touch the lives of Christians and non-Christians alike.

Galatians 5:22-23

 

·        LOAF #3 IS PRAYER

 

God has given us this wonderful resource of prayer and He has also given us some wonderful promises.

Matthew 7:7-11, 1 John 5:14-15

 

Prayer is a resource God gives for us to reach the multitude.  God is more concerned than you are about people, but God has also determined that He is going to act in response to His people.

 

Prayer should be given for the unsaved. 1 Timothy 2:1-4

 

Prayer should be made for the saved.

Ephesians 6:18 - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

 

·        LOAF #4 - THE WORD OF GOD

 

When you witness and when you give comfort or advice, what you have to say is really not that important or all that powerful.

 

It is what God has to say that is important.

It is the Word of God that is key to salvation. 1 Peter 1:23

 

It is God's Word that is effective in the life of the believer. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

 

God's word is effective whenever it is presented accurately. Isaiah 55:10-11

 

·        LOAF # 5 IS SPIRITUAL GIFTS

 

God has given you a supernatural speaking or serving gift with which to serve the Lord.  Whatever Spiritual ability God has given you, you need to use that gift! 2 Timothy 1:6

Check out the lists of gifts as found in the Scriptures, especially the list found in Romans 12. As God to show you your gift, and stir up your gift by asking God for strength and using the gift!

 

·        LOAF # 6 IS GOOD WORKS

 

Please don't think for one minute that our ministry to the multitude is limited to words. The way we reach out to others will speak be a silent testimony to the glory of God! Matthew 5:16

 

·        LOAF # 7 IS OUR MONEY

 

We have money to invest in God's Work.

Sometimes we invest in missions.

Sometimes we invest in the needs of others.

God has given us resources so we can be a blessing. Matthew 6:19-31

 

So in considering our outreach to the multitude around us, we have resources.

 

What do we do with these resources?

WE BRING THEM TO JESUS LIKE JESUS DID

 

That's OUR RELIANCE

 

Jesus blessed the loaves and fishes and multiplied them!

There was enough for everyone to eat with plenty to spare.

As we bring our resources to Jesus, submitting them to Him and then using them, Jesus will bless, and we will reach the multitude around us!

 

CONSIDER THE MULTITUDE:

JESUS TEACHES ON PRAYER

Lesson #6 – KEEP PRAYING – LUKE 18:1-8

 

1 Thessalonians 5:17 - Pray without ceasing.

Colossians 4:2 - Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Ephesians 6:18 - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

1 Peter 4:7 - But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

·        What are some things that you do that you have been doing for a long time and expect to do as long as you can?

·        Why should prayer be something that we continue to do? The verses listed above should help you answer this question.

·        Why do some Christians never really get into the prayer habit?

·        Why do some Christians stop the prayer habit?

 

Like eating, sleeping, and breathing, praying should be something we are committed to doing until the day we die. Using a prayer parable, Jesus encourages us to keep on praying.

 

A PURPOSEFUL PARABLE – Vs. 1

 

·        We are not always told why Jesus gives a parable, but in this case we are.

·        Jesus told the parable because he just talked about tough times coming before His return.  (Luke 17:22-37) He didn’t want his followers to “faint” or “lose heart” when things looked particularly bleak. 

·        What does it mean to always pray or to pray “without ceasing”?  Does this mean that the only thing I am to do is pray?

·        How will a lack of steady prayer cause us to “faint” or “lose heart”?

 

A PERVERTED JUDGE – Vs. 2

 

·        Why is the fear of God an important attribute for a judge?  Do you think that a lack of reverence for God has impacted our judicial system?                                                                             2 Chronicles 19:6-7 - And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment. Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

·        Why is regard for man another important attribute for being a good judge?

 

A PERSISTENT WIDOW – Vs. 3

 

·        This widow was looking for justice.  She had a legitimate legal appeal.

·        What factors would have been “stacked up” against this widow?

·        The widow did not come just once to the judge.  She kept appealing to the judge.

 

A POSITIVE RESULT – Vss. 4-5

 

·        Vs. 4 – For whatever reason the judge ignored the widow.  But she would not be ignored. She kept pursuing him for justice.

·        Vs. 5 – The judge finally gave in.  He gave in because he didn’t want her to weary him, or blacken his eye. The idea was to hit as a boxer did and leave damage around the eye.

 

A PERSONAL APPLICATION – Vss. 6-8a

 

·        Vs. 6 – In what way may God appear to be like the unrighteous judge?

·        Vs. 7 – How is God different from the unrighteous judge?

·        Why does God delay his answers to prayer? Romans 8:28, James 1:2-4, 2 Peter 3:8-9

·        Who is God dealing with when we pray?  How does this encourage you?                         John 1:12 - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Galatians 4:6-7 - And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

·        Vs. 8a – To “avenge speedily” does not mean there is no delay.  It means when God acts He will act in a decisive, speedy way. How have you seen God answer prayer in a decisive way?

 

A PERPLEXING QUESTION – Vs. 8b

 

·        This appears to be a rhetorical question designed to challenge the disciples and us.

·        Of course there will be faith on the earth when Jesus comes, although most of the world will be unbelieving.

·        Jesus seems to be asking if there was going to be the kind of praying going on that the widow evidenced in this parable. Are God’s people going to be showing their faith by their continued prayer?

·        Also note that the woman’s prayer was for justice. What are some of the things that we can pray for that are cries for justice?

Philippians 1:27-30

JOY UNDER PRESSURE

 

There are many pressures in the world today.

 

There's the pressure of meeting a deadline. Something must be done at the prescribed time, like a book report for school, or a quota or report for work.

 

There's the pressures that come from disagreement or the job, in school, at work or at home. Often there is pressure when we do not agree.

 

There's the pressure that comes from living. That includes paying bills, raising the family, planning for the future, dealing with the neighbors, and being active in a church.

 

There's the pressure that comes from uncertainties.  Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, there have been many uncertainties expressed in our nation and around the world.

 

There is also the pressure that comes from taking a stand as Christian. 2 Timothy 3:12 warns us that there will be persecution for anyone who tries to live a Godly life in the name of Christ. If there was anybody who understood the pressures that came from standing for Christ, it is the Apostle Paul.  He had been falsely accused, mocked, misunderstood, stoned, flogged and thrown in jail because of his testimony for Christ.

 

One of the themes found in the book of Philippians is joy. In the passage before us, Paul tells the Philippians and us how to have joy under pressure.

 

BEHAVIOR  - Vs. 27

 

Please note in these verses that joy under pressure is not an individual activity. It's not something I usually handle alone, although sometimes I must. The way Paul is writing here, he's writing to the whole group and expecting a group response.  Of course to have a group response, everyone in the group must respond individually.

 

Our behavior should be becoming or complimentary to the Gospel of Christ.

Our behavior should also mean taking a stand for Christ "in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the Gospel."

 

BOLDNESS - Vs. 28

 

In effect, Paul is telling us here not to let our enemies scare us.

 

BENEFIT - Vs. 29

 

The benefit of being under the pressure of persecution is that it is a privilege to suffer for the one who suffered on the cross for us.

 

BROTHERHOOD - Vs. 30

 

It is a mutual conflict.

Rest assured that you are not the only under pressure.

Never think that you are alone.

Don't' think that you are the only person or congregation that might suffer.

Elijah thought that he was alone, yet there were 7,000 who had not submitted to idol worship. 1 Kings 19:14, 18

A PERSON WITH T. L. C. CARES

1 Thessalonians 2:7-8 - But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

A PERSON WITH T. L. C. LABORS

1 Thessalonians 2:9 - For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

Galatians 6:9 - And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

IT’S ALL YOURS

Luke 14:33 - So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Luke 14:33 (ESV) - So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

 Romans 12:1 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

Galatians 5:22-25 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

When I am truly surrendered, the Holy Spirit will control me. When I am truly surrendered, I’m saying to God “It’s all yours!” That means that I am saying to God:

EVERY MOMENT IS YOURS - Ephesians 5:16 - Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Psalm 27:4 - One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

Philippians 3:10 - That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

EVERY MOVEMENT (What I do.) IS YOURS – Colossians 3:17 - And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

EVERY METHOD (How I do it.) IS YOURS - Isaiah 55:6-9 - Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

EVERY MEDITATION IS YOURS - Psalm 19:14 - Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Psalm 119:11 - Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Psalm 119:97 - O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

EVERY MENTION IS YOURS - Psalm 141:3 - Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Colossians 4:6- Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

EVERY MEMORY IS YOURS – Philippians 3:13-14 - Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

EVERY MISSILE (COMING AT ME) IS YOURS - Ephesians 6:16 - Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

EVERY MISHAP IS YOURS - James 1:2-4 - My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
