Exodus 20:15

INTEGRITY CHECK

TEN FOR THE MEN! - #9

Exodus 20:15 - Thou shalt not steal.

Proverbs 22:1 - A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather

than silver and gold.

·       How important is your own personal integrity and why?

·       How is stealing often a subtle sin?

·       How do people justify stealing in various forms?

·       How can stealing at any level subtly hurt our personal integrity and Christian witness?

·       What motivates people to steal?

About the last thing that you and I want to be called is a thief.  Stealing takes so many forms, however, that it is good to check our integrity by considering places and ways we might be tempted to steal.

STEALING ON THE JOB

·       What are some of the things that you have seen or heard of people taking home from work that actually belonged to the company?

·       Perhaps some people would not consider this stealing (We do!).  Why?

·       On what occasions is it appropriate to use things from work for your personal gain?

·       Embezzlement is certainly wrong.  How does it hurt everyone involved in a company?

·       Should a Christian report stealing or keep quiet?

·       How is “goofing off” on the job stealing and how does it hurt everyone?

·       How should you handle the situation in which you are “too industrious” and “making others look bad” who are goofing off?

STEALING IN THE TAX OFFICE

·       “A tax preparer with an office in Jersey City admitted in Federal Court yesterday that he helped file 7,958 fraudulent tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service that resulted in about $17 million in illegal refunds from 1989 to 1994. Clarence Burnett, 51, of Orange, said the fraudulent refunds, averaging about $2,200 each, came from inflating clients' claims for charitable contributions, medical expenses and other deductions. Mr. Burnett faces up to six years in prison and a $500,000 fine, said Carlos Ortiz, an assistant United States Attorney.” New York Times, 11/17/95

·       Why is it so easy to “stretch the truth” when it comes to filling out tax forms?

·       How do some people justify cheating on their taxes?

·       Of course cheating on our taxes is not only stealing, but is lying as well!

STEALING AT SCHOOL

·       “Back in 1940, only 20 percent of college students admitted to cheating during their academic careers. Today, that number has increased to 75 to 98 percent.” education-portal.com/articles/75_to_98_Percent_of_College_Students_Have_Cheated.html

·       What motivates people to steal answers and plagiarize other people’s work?

·       How do some parents help their children cheat?

STEALING AT HOME

·       1 John 4:7-8 - Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

·       What are some of the things that parents rob from their children?

·       What are some things that children have robbed from their parents?

·       How have bad personal habits caused people to rob from family members?

·       How do family members rob each other of love?

STEALING IN CHURCH

·       Malachi 3:8 - Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

·       2 Corinthians 9:6-7 - But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

·       What are some of the reasons Christians use for not giving to God’s work the way they should?

·       How can we tell if we are robbing God?

·       What are some other ways Christians rob God? Revelation 2:4 - Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.                                                   1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.                                                                    2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

·       Ephesians 5:16 - Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

·       In what ways do Christians rob other Christians?                           1 John 3:17 - But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

·       Hebrews 10:24-25 - And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

STEALING AT PERSONAL BUSINESS

·       Psalms 37:21 - The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.

·       Romans 13:8 - Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

·       Why are we guilty of robbery when we do not pay our bills?

·       Briefly, how can we avoid such robbery?

·       How do you feel about advertisements for getting out of debt and paying “only a fraction of what you owe!”?

 STEALING IN THE COMMUNITY

·       Should I tell someone when they give me the wrong amount of change?

·       What should I do if I find a wallet, money, or any personal property that is not mine?

·       Why should we be careful not to shoplift?

·       What are the benefits for the Christian who is honest and never steals?

1 SAMUEL 27, 29, 30

A BACKSLIDER’S JOURNEY

·       What is a backslider?

·       Do you think the above illustration reflects how a person becomes a backslider?

·       How can you tell if you are backslidden?

·       What is the difference between being backslidden and unsaved?

·       Why is God ready to take backsliders back?

·       What are some of the consequences to being backslidden?

David had been running from Saul for about 10 years.  He was getting weary.  He let his guard drop and ended up being backslidden. David, however, being a true servant of God, was not down forever, and eventually came back to the Lord.  In David’s life we see four steps away from the Lord into the backslidden condition.  We also see four steps back to fellowship that he took.

FOUR STEPS AWAY FROM THE LORD

DESPONDENCY – 27:1

·       Why did David have reason to become despondent? What do you think he could have done to prevent despondency?

·       What was wrong with David’s logic? What was he forgetting?

·       A lack or weakness of faith will often lead to despondency.  What can we do to help prevent despondency?                                                                                                                                              Romans 10:17 - So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

DETOUR – 27:2-7

·       Vss. 2-3 – In what ways does backsliding affect others?

·       Vs. 4 – In one sense David’s problem was gone.  Saul stopped looking for him.                              Why would it have been better for David to deal with Saul instead of the Philistines?  Why is it often better to deal with work, school, family or church problems than to “cut and run”?

·       Vss. 5-7 - What is ironic about David’s allegiance to a Philistine king?  1 Samuel 17:36

·       How do backsliders detour into strange alliances?

DECEPTION – 27: 8-12, 29:1-11

·       27:8-12 – Basically, what was David trying to do?  Why does this not work well?                                                        Matthew 6:24 - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

·       How can you tell when you are trying to please two masters?

·       29:1-11 – Notice that David was scheduled to fight his own people.                                                              In what ways do backsliders end up opposing their fellow Christians?

·       Notice that God rescued David from this problem. How sincere were David’s comments in verse 8?

·       There are consequences to deception.  What are some of them?  How did David pay for his deception? (See chapter 30.)

DESPAIR – 30:1-6

·       Vss. 1-2 - Tragedy strikes David and all his men.

·       Vss. 4-6 – Notice what grief can do to our reasoning. These were men who voluntarily followed David, but are now ready to stone him.  What rationale was there for blaming David?

·       In what ways does backsliding always cause grief?

·       In what way did God have David right where He wanted him?

FOUR STEPS BACK TO THE LORD

DEPENDENCY – 30:6

·       ...but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. – How do you think David did this? How can we do it?

·       Why do you think that this was a needed first step in David’s return to God?

·       Why is the first step back to God the hardest?

·       What Bible verses teach that we are to depend on God?

DIRECTION  – 30:7-16

·       Vss. 7-8 – David was once again seeking God’s direction.

·       Why is it possible that David’s relationship with Abiathar may have been strained?

·       Psalm 32:8 reminds us that God wants to and will guide us.

·       Vss. 9-16 - How did God providently guide David?  What are some ways that He will guide us?

DELIVERANCE  – 30:17-20

·       David the “backslider” was now restored to fellowship with God.

·       It says “David recovered all.”  What was the greatest recovery through this whole story?

·       What did David lose during his backsliding that he never did recover?

·       Why is it important to pull out of a backslidden condition as soon as possible?

·       Of course, it’s best not to backslide at all!

DETERRENT  – 30:21-25

·       In what ways did the men who “stayed with the stuff” suffer even when they did get their share of “stuff”?

·       By insisting that these men got their cut what did David deter?

·       What does this story tell us about David when he was not backslidden?

·       What does this story teach us?

Mark 6:14-29

INTRIGUE IN THE PALACE!

(Some of us remember the Three Stooges. I believe it was them who once did a short movie called “Malice in the Palace”. You could use that title instead.)

INTRODUCTION – Vss. 14-16

Jesus had sent his disciples on a preaching mission.  Their works were so great people began to speculate as to the identity of Jesus. Herod thought it was John, whom he had beheaded.  Here is the story of the Intrigue in the Palace!

A STEADFAST PROPHET – Vss. 17-20

Herod had arrested John because he had told Herod that his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife. Herodias had a grudge against John. She would have killed John, but couldn’t.

Herod feared, respected, and listened to John.

A SENSUOUS GIRL – Vss. 21-22

Herod’s step-daughter danced a sensuous dance that pleased Herod and his associates.

A STUPID PROMISE – Vss. 22-23

Herod made a promise to give the girl whatever she asked for.

A SINISTER WIFE – Vss. 24-25

Herodias instructed her daughter to ask for the head of John on a charger!

A SILENCED MESSENGER – Vss. 26-29

Although the king was sorry, he was not sorry enough to go back on his word.

John was executed.

1 CORINTHIANS 3:10-15

WE’RE BUILDING A CHURCH!

We’re building a church!

Of course it is Christ that is building His church through us. Matthew 16:18

Of course God has sent gifted men to the church to help build it. Ephesians 4:11-13

But the building of the Lord’s church is not limited to the work of Pastors, Evangelists, Missionaries and church board members. Although pastors and board members are especially responsible for how they build!

If you are a regular attendee here, you are a builder in this church. Even if all you do is sit in a pew for one service on Sunday, you are still helping to build this church and formulate what it is.

You see, when people build there are differences in the materials people use and in their quality. There are also differences in the quality of construction. If you were having a house built you would want to use the best materials and the best quality workers that you can afford.

But we are working on a most important building, one not made with hands, for the church is not a building but an “assembly” of believers who name the name of Christ as Savior!

This is a church that Jesus is building and He expects you as one He saved, to participate the building program. He also expects you to do your very best.

In a sense as we work on the Lord’s church we are working on our own future, our own house. For as our text tells us this morning, we are building a church for Jesus Christ, and we will be rewarded for the quality of our work!

We’re building a church!  Whether we like it or not, we are participants in God’s building program. We are either doing a good job, a mediocre job, a not so good job, or a lousy job.  And a word of warning; we sometimes do a good job for a while and then get mad, hurt, offended, or just plain lazy and stop doing our best.  The Lord does not like this!

A SURE FOUNDATION – Vss. 10-11

1 Corinthians 3:10 - According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

Notice that the work which Paul did in the church was by the “grace of God”.  God in His grace saved Paul who had been an enemy of the Gospel. God in his grace gave Paul a job to do in building His church.  1 Corinthians 15:10

In our text Paul calls himself a wise master builder. He was the one who founded the church in Corinth. Humanly speaking, He was the architect and general contractor.

Remember the church was not and is not a literal building.  The church is an assembly of people who have come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. We are dealing with God’s people.  We are dealing with God’s program.

Paul warns the Corinthians to be careful as to how they build on his work.

We must also remember that as Paul built by the grace of God, so should we!  We can’t do it successfully in our own strength.

1 Corinthians 3:11 - For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

There is only one true foundation on which to build a church and on which to build our lives.  That foundation is the Lord Jesus Christ.

The work that Jesus did was His work on the cross, where He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. Psalm 118:22-23, Acts 4:11-12

Jesus Christ is the foundation of the church, and He is the foundation for eternal life.  He is the name by which people can be saved because He is the one who laid down his life for our sins.                          1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Every person who has sincerely placed their faith and trust in Christ has been “saved”, that is, rescued from the penalty for their sin and given eternal life in Heaven. Ephesians 2:8-9

If you have not placed your faith in Christ alone, don’t wait any longer.  Lay your foundation for eternal life.

A SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY

As a Christian you have laid the foundation of Jesus Christ in your life.

As a church we have laid the foundation of Jesus Christ.

Now, each person gets to build on the foundation laid.

1 Corinthians 3:12 - Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

When people build buildings they can use various types of building materials.  There are those made of permanent materials, like gold, silver and precious stones.  There are those made of replaceable materials, wood, hay and stubble.

As you make your contribution to the building of this church you are either building with gold, silver and precious stones or wood, hay, and stubble.

Some of the things we build into the church are precious. Other things we build into the church are worthless or damaging as far as the long haul is concerned.

Although Paul doesn’t tell us what these precious and worthless ingredients actually are, we can look to the Bible and find things that are precious – gold, silver and precious stones. Their opposites are worthless – wood hay and stubble.

This morning I want us to think about building materials for Jesus’ church that are of the gold, silver, and precious stone variety.

·       BUILD WITH FACTS!

This building, the church, needs to be built on precious facts.                                                                                            What facts are precious?  It’s the facts of this book, the Bible that are precious! Psalms 19:7-11, Mark 13:31

Of course anything that is taught or written contrary to the Word of God is false!  The world’s wisdom is one huge fallacy!

The person who is building with precious stones, not only has a foundation of the work of Christ for eternal life, but the words of Christ for living the Christian life. He does not only believe that the Words of Christ, and His Book, the Bible are true, but He obeys them!

It is not enough to accept the Bible as the Word of God, you must obey! Matthew 7:24-27

The person who takes the Lord Jesus’ Words as fact obeys them! He is building with gold, silver precious stones. The person who disobeys the Word of God is building on falsehoods.

·       BUILD WITH FAITH!

What is the greatest compliment Jesus ever gave a person in the Gospels?  I believe it was made to the centurion who told Jesus that Jesus didn’t need to make a house call to heal his servant.                Matthew 8:8-9

Jesus was so impressed, this is what he said in Matthew 8:10 - …Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Whenever we trust God we are building the church with precious building materials. When we fail to trust God, which is usually evident by worry, we are building the church with worthless materials.

One of the great ways we need to express faith is through our prayers. Mark 11:22-24

·       BUILD WITH FILLING!

If you are a Christian, God’s Holy Spirit is inside of your life! He indwells you! GOD LIVES INSIDE OF YOU! Romans 8:9

And God wants you to experience the power of the Holy Spirit in your life.  That is indeed precious! Ephesians 3:16

The way we experience the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives is to let Him control us!               Galatians 5:16, Ephesians 5:18

I see three steps to take in order to be filled with the Spirit.

DEATH TO SELF - Luke 9:23 - And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Death to self produces an empty vessel, one the Holy Spirit can fill.

DECLARATION OF SIN - 1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Declaration of sin brings about a clean vessel, one the Holy Spirit will fill.

DEPENDENCE ON GOD - Luke 11:13 - If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

We do not have to ask for the Holy Spirit to indwell us, he already does if we are truly Christians.

If God wants to control me through His Spirit it is foolish to not let Him do so!  I will not have God’s best or be God’s best unless I let God have control through his Spirit.

·       BUILD WITH FORCE!

One of the ways we are to build Christ’s church is by adding souls to the Kingdom!  This was Jesus’ plan from the very beginning. Matthew 28:18-20

As you are filled, controlled by the Holy Spirit you have the force to be the witness for Christ that He wants you to be! Acts 1:8

It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can be effective witnesses for Jesus Christ.  If we are going to build Christ’s church every one of us is to witness in the power of the Holy Spirit. If we say, we can’t witness, we make God a liar!

Of course when we try to witness in our own strength, we will first of all be less likely to witness because the Holy Spirit won’t be guiding us. Secondly we will be forceless, because we can’t be effective without God’s help.

·       BUILD WITH FRUIT!

When the Holy Spirit controls me, there will be fruit!  This fruit will help build the kingdom.          Galatians 5:22-23

When I fail to bear fruit, I am not building the church. That is worthless!

·       BUILD WITH FERVENCY!

What this church needs is men and women fervent for Jesus Christ! Matthew 22:37-40

When we are not fervent we are flat. When we are flat we are not pleasing God! We are worthless. Revelation 3:15-16

A SIGNIFICANT RETRIBUTION

There will be a day when the Christian will stand before the Lord Jesus Christ. He will not be there to determine whether He will go to Heaven or Hell.

His faith is in Christ made Heaven the choice.  But he will be there to be rewarded.

2 Corinthians 5:10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

1 Corinthians 3:13-15 - Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

·       You will be evaluated for how you built your life and Christ’s church.

·       Your deeds and motives will be revealed.

·       They will be tested by fire.

·       Think of a big pile of your works as a Christian being brought out and dumped.  Think of them being torched.

·       That which was worthless will burn up. That which was precious will remain and rewarded.

·       God is clear that we will not lose our salvation if all our works are burned, but we will lose our reward.

What rewards we receive will be the testimony of how much we really loved Jesus, and how much we appreciated His dying for us!

GOD CARES FOR HIS OWN

THE BACK OF THE BOOK #8

A little boy was eagerly looking forward to the birthday party of a friend who lived only a few blocks away. When the day finally arrived, a blizzard made the sidewalks and roads nearly impassable. The lad’s father, sensing the danger, hesitated to let his son go. The youngster reacted tearfully. “But Dad,” he pleaded, “all the other kids will be there. Their parents are letting them go.” The father thought for a moment, then replied softly, “All right, you may go.” Surprised but overjoyed, the boy bundled up and plunged into the raging storm. The driving snow made visibility almost impossible, and it took him more than half an hour to trudge the short distance to the party. As he rang the doorbell, he turned briefly to look out into the storm. His eye caught the shadow of a retreating figure. It was his father. He had followed his son’s every step to make sure he arrived safely. - Source unknown - http://www.bible.org/illus.php?topic_id=618

·       How does this story remind you that God cares for His own?

·       What Scripture verses remind you that God cares for His own?

REVIEW – REVELATION 6

·       THE HORSES ON EARTH – Vss. 1-8 – Seals #1-4

·       THE HEROES IN HEAVEN – Vss. 9-11 – Seal #5

·       THE HARM ON EARTH – Vss. 12-14 – Seal #6

·       THE HOPELESSNESS OF MEN – Vss. 15-17

It is a known fact among Christians that God cares for His own.  In fact, this truth has been true since the beginning of time for Old and New Testament saints and born again Christians since then.  God’s care for His own will not change during the Tribulation.  There is a brief interlude after the opening of the sixth seal that describes God’s care for His saints during the Tribulation period.

A PAUSE IN THE ACTION – Vss. 1-3

·       Chapter 6 ended with the declaration that the great day of God’s wrath had come.  Yet, we are reminded by chapter 7 that even in His wrath He shows mercy.  …in wrath remember mercy. Habakkuk 3:2

·       Vs. 1 – The four corners of the earth probably represent the four points of the compass. The angels are holding back the winds. The winds would be symbolic of judgment.  As the winds are stilled there is a respite from any natural disaster.

·       Vss. 2-3 – Another angel appears and tells the angels who were ready to hurt the earth and sea to hold off until a very important sealing takes place.

·       The seal is upon “the servants of the living God”.  This is a seal of protection that will keep the Anti-Christ and plagues from hurting those who are sealed.

·       As we’ll see, God has a very special mission for those who are sealed.  Nothing can take their lives because they have a job to do.  Remember, nobody can take your life until the ministry God has given you is completed.

·       Revelation 14:1-5 gives a graphic picture of the 144,000.

THE PLACEMENT OF THE SEAL – Vss. 4-8

·       Vs. 4 – We learn the identity of the 144,000.  It is best to take the statement literally, that these are Israelites.  The church is in Heaven.  There is a huge number of Gentiles who will be saved during the Great Tribulation mentioned starting in verse 9.

·       Vss. 5-8 – Although most Jews today do not know their tribal background, God does.  He will put His Seal upon these special Jews according to the stated tribal distribution.  This list is hard to understand. Levi and Joseph are mentioned in the list while Dan and Ephraim are not.

·       We can not be sure, but it seems that Dan and Ephraim were omitted from this special list of representatives for evangelism because of their leadership in idolatry.  Judges 18 tells how Dan went into idol worship.  It was Jeroboam, an Ephraimite, who led the Northern Kingdom of Israel into idolatry in 1 Kings 12.

·       Although they are not mentioned in the list of 144,000, Dan and Ephraim will have their place in the Millennial Kingdom according to Ezekiel 48.

·       Although other Jews will surely be saved during the Great Tribulation, these men evidently had a special task of evangelism.  The promise of Matthew 24:14 will be fulfilled before the Lord returns to earth.  The two evangelists of Revelation 11 and the 144,000 will probably be responsible for this happening.

THE PRAISE IN HEAVEN – Vss. 9-12

·       Vs. 9 – A great host of people is seen before the throne in Heaven.  This is not the 144,000. They were seen on earth.  This is not the church because the church, represented by the elders is a distinct group.  They are clothed with robes which speak of righteousness and have palms, which show worship.

·       Vss. 10-12 – This host begins to worship and all of Heaven joins in.  We must realize that Heaven is a place where God will get all the praise and adoration that He deserves! Our services here on earth should serve as practice!

THE PEOPLE WHO WORSHIPPED – Vss. 13-17

·       Vs. 13 – The elder asks John this question, because he wants to answer it for John.

·       Vs. 14 – This is the great host of people who will be saved during the great tribulation. We saw many of them previously under the altar as those who were martyred for their faith.                Revelation 6:9-11

·       Like all who have been saved, the robes of these saints will have been washed in the blood of the Lamb!

·       Vs. 15 – They will perpetually serve God in worship and enjoy fellowship with God.

·       Vs. 16 – All the deprivation that they suffered will be no more. It will be replaced with no hunger, nor thirst, nor physical discomfort.
