The Buckler

Posted by: bneumann848 <bneumann848@...>

In five different places, the Old Testament describes God (and His word) as a buckler.  Honestly, I had to look that one up – it’s not a word we use every day.  What I found intrigued me.

A buckler was a small shield worn on the left arm.  Used in hand-to-hand combat, it was both a defensive weapon (to protect from attack) and an offensive weapon (something to strike with). Another meaning of the word is “one who shields or protects.”  In light of that, let’s look at those five scriptures.

God shields and protects those who trust in Him (2 Samuel 22:31, Psalm 18:2, Psalm 18:30).  He shields and protects those who walk uprightly (Proverbs 2:7).  His truth will shield and protect those who dwell in the secret place (Psalm 91:4).  He acts both defensively to protect us from the enemy’s attack, and offensively to rebuke the devourer for our sake.  Put your trust in God and His word.  You don’t have to face the trials of life alone.  You have a Buckler.
