THE CURRENCY OF FAITH

Now Thomas, one of the Twelve called ‘The Twin’ was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him….But he said to them ,’Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe.’” (John 20:24-25)

Thomas is right, seeing is believing. How many times we of the faith feel guilty that we don’t do more to witness to our faith, to share the Good News.  When we think those thoughts, we’re usually thinking of great missionary works, or writings, or other profound things we would like to do to profess and advance our Christian faith. But there are so many things we can do starting right now:

(1) Wear it: we can wear Christian jewellery. Hang Christian symbols in our car, our office.

(2) Tell people you’re praying for them:  when someone is troubled or ill, tell them explicitly that you are praying for them.

(3) Walk away: overtly avoid gossip, vulgar language, inappropriate jokes, racism conversation, etc. When people begin expressing any of these things, let them know you have a commitment with a Loving, Living, Lord that doesn’t include such talk/behaviour…and walk away from it.

(4) Dress it: our dress calls attention. We can dress to call attention to ourselves. Attire that says, “Look at me!” is causing focus on the wrong thing. Do we dress suggestively so we’ll get attention and manage people’s thoughts the wrong direction for our selfish ego?

(5) Speak it: Be courageous enough to talk about your faith commitment. Don’t be obnoxious so as to drive people away from the faith and into the Evil One’s influence, but don’t be shy about talking about your faith either. Making this a practice, forces you to keep a mental “faith diary”, i.e., keeping alert to how your faith really is active in your own life. You’ll be amazed; consistently talking about your faith will help you grow in faith as well as others!

(6) Stay Calm: nothing says more about our faith than how we act in times of frustration, in times of concern, in times of threat. These are pivotal moments to both reinforce our own faith as well as build others’.

Missouri isn’t the only, “Show Me” state: we all live in a perpetual state of “show me.”  If you sincerely wish you could do something in behalf of your relationship with your Lord, you can. The eye is always watching: both God’s and, your brother’s and sister’s.
