BASIC R.C. BELIEF A name referring to all Roman Catholic Bishops; the Pope is called the Supreme Pontiff. Pagan priests of ancient Rome were in charge of the Tiber bridges; pontiff means bridge builder. The head of the Babylonian cult was called Pontifex Maximus (Supreme Pontiff). This title was later claimed by the Bishop of Rome (Pope).
