May I beg you carefully to judge every preacher, not by his gifts, not by his elocutionary powers, not by his status in society, not by the respectability of his congregation, not by the prettiness of his church, but by this – does he preach the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation? If he does, your sitting under his ministry may prove to you the means of begetting faith in you. But if he does not, you cannot expect God's blessing.
[Pragmatism] seems predicated on the idea that artificial technique and human strategy are crucial to the church’s mission. Many appear to believe that we can capture people for Christ and the church only if our programs are imaginative enough and our sermons are persuasive enough. Therefore they bend their philosophy of ministry to suit whatever techniques seem to satisfy the most unbelievers.
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time mix
well. Add flour, soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg to creamy mixture
alternately with beer. Stir in walnuts and raisins. Pour mixture into well
buttered and floured cake pan that will fit into crockpot. Cover tin with
four or five paper towels. Put into pot. Put lid on crockpot loosely to
allow steam to escape. Cook on high for 3 1/2 hours or until cake is done.
Remove pan from pot and allow cake to cool on wire rack for 15 minutes
before removing from pan.
