The nature and depth of human pride are illuminated by comparing boasting to self-pity. Both are manifestations of pride. Boasting is the response of pride to success. Self-pity is the response of pride to suffering. Boasting says, 'I deserve admiration because I have achieved so much.' Self-pity says, 'I deserve admiration because I have suffered so much.' Boasting is the voice of pride in the heart of the strong. Self-pity is the voice of pride in the heart of the weak. Boasting sounds self-sufficient. Self-pity sounds self-sacrificing. The reason self-pity does not look like pride is that it appears to be so needy. But the need arises from a wounded ego. It doesn't come from a sense of unworthiness, but from a sense of unrecognized worthiness. It is the response of unapplauded pride. Christian Hedonism severs the root of self-pity. People don't feel self-pity when suffering is accepted for the sake of joy.

There is no doubt that we as Christians should be civil toward those whose opinions might differ from ours. But there is a world of difference between civility and affirmation. It is one thing to be kind and respectful to my homosexual neighbors. It is quite another thing to say I must approve of their sinful lifestyle. To say we need to approve of everyone’s beliefs without ever given the opportunity for disagreement is simply inconsistent with the principles that built our great nation of democracy and freedom! It is also committing another act of judgmentalism. For telling someone else that he or she is being judgmental is a rather judgmental thing to do! People who do not want absolute standards have declared that all must follow their absolute standard that forbids judging others!

Chocolate Sunshine Cake

INGREDIENTS

3/4 c Butter — soften
1 1/2 c Sugar
3 lg Eggs
1 ts Vanilla
1 3/4 c Flour
3/4 c Unsweetened cocoa
2 tb Cornstarch
2 ts Instant coffee
1 ts Baking soda
1/4 ts Salt
1 c Milk
ORANGE CREAM FILLING—–
1/2 c Butter
1/3 c Sour cream
1 ts Vanilla
1/2 ts Salt
2 ts Lemon juice
6 c Powdered sugar
3 tb Grated orange peel

INSTRUCTIONS

In large bowl, beat butter or margarine untill light and fluffy. Gradually
beat in sugar, then eggs and vanilla. Combine flour cocoa, cornstarch,
instant coffe, baking soda and salt beat in alternately with milk begining
and ending with flour mixture. Grease two 9" rounds and lightly dust with
cocoa; pour batter into prepared pans. Bake in preheated oven for 20
minutes; cool in pans on wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove from pans; cool
the rest of the way. Take a long sharp knife and cut each cake in 2 layers;
spread filling over the 2 bottom halves. Place on tops; cover with wrap
till you serve. FILLING: Beat together all ingredients then refridgerate
till needed.
