'The issue is too complex; smart people disagree, and I don’t think I can say one way or the other whether abortion is the taking of a human life.' A response like this is a confession of ignorance, and that is welcome. But if we don’t know, shouldn’t we err on the side of life? If I’m on a hunting trip and see something moving behind a tree and can’t decide whether it’s a fellow human being or a buck, should we conclude that shooting is thereby permissible? If there’s even a chance that what’s in the womb is an innocent human being, then we cannot support killing it.

It appears singular to the reader of St. Paul's Epistles that the apostle in one passage speaks of Christians as perfect, and in another as imperfect. At one time, he describes them in terms that would lead us to infer that they are holy as God is holy; and at another, he speaks of them as full of sin and corruption. In the text, he denominates them “the elect of God, holy and beloved,” and yet immediately proceeds to exhort them to the possession and practice of the most common Christian graces – such as humility and forgiveness. In a preceding paragraph, he tells the Colossians that they “are dead to sin, and their life is hid with Christ in God,” and then goes on to urge them to overcome some of the most gross sins in the whole catalogue – “mortify, therefore, your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (Col. 3:3-5).

(crostini Napoletani) Neapolitan-style Crostini

INGREDIENTS

16 Slices of Italian bread
Cut 1/2-inch thick
1/4 c Extra-virgin olive oil
1/3 c Black or green olivada* OR
1/3 c 4 oz. Calamata olives
Pitted or finely chopped
1/2 lb Fresh mozzarella cheese
Cut in 14 1/4-inch slices
1/2 lb Plum tomatoes, cut
Lengthwise into 16 1/4-inch
Slices
1/8 t Salt
1/8 t Freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 400F.  Brush one side of the bread slices with
some of the olive oil and arrange on a baking sheet oiled side up.
Bake until lightly browned and crusty, about 4 minutes. 2. Spread the
olivada or chopped olives on each toast, cover each with a slice of
mozzarella and top with a slice of tomato.  Brush the tomatoes with
the remaining oil and sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Bake until
the cheese is melted, about 8 to 10 minutes.  Serve at once.    Olivada
is a puree of black or green olives packed in oil that is  sold at
specialty food stores.  You can substitute tapenade or make  your own.
(Note from me:  We have a batch of pesto in the  refrigerator so I plan
to use it instead of the olivada.)  I also  plan to use Creole or
