INSTRUCTIONS

Today's recipe is great for the dorm room. Many dormitories have a
common kitchen area available to students, and this recipe is easy for
them to prepare and serve. Most of the ingredients are easy to ship to
your favorite college student; just print this recipe and send with a
care package, and you'll be their favorite relative for quite some
time. (Anyone who sends food usually is.) In a large bowl, combine
oatmeal, walnuts, and extracts. Set aside for use later. Heat
applesauce in a saucepan over medium heat for about 5 minutes until
thoroughly warmed. Add sugar, butter, cocoa, and salt. Bring the
mixture to a boil, stirring constantly for about 1 minute. Remove the
mixture from heat source and immediately add it to the reserved
mixture of dry ingredients. Thoroughly combine all ingredients with a
wooden spoon. Drop by the teaspoonful onto waxed paper. When cooled
and a bit firm, roll in confectioner's sugar, if desired. Store in an
air-tight container or refrigerate. Or pass around the dorm room and
don't worry about leftovers students rarely possess them. Kitchen
Staff Tip: What's the bare minimum for a college student spice rack?
Try this basic selection of herbs and spices; it will cover many
recipes for easy-to-prepare foods. Salt and black pepper, garlic and
onion powders, dried sage, tarragon, oregano, dill, marjoram and
basil, cinnamon and cloves, chili powder and paprika, and a splash of
curry powder. Posted to dailyrecipe@recipe-a-day.com by Recipe-a-Day
