XIV. BEST SCRIPTURES FOR THOSE INVOLVED WITH CULTS

(Use also the passages in I, II, and IX)

  1. Essential issues common to cults
    1. No leader given unique authority from God

2PE 1:20-21 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

b. Salvation not through works

EPH 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–not by works, so that no one can boast.

c. Salvation only through belief in Jesus Christ

1JO 5:11-12 This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.

JOH 20:31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

2. For those involved in cults based on Western religions

  1. The Holy Spirit is truly God

1CO 2:10-12 But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.

b. Jesus Christ is truly God

HEB 1:1-2 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

c. Jesus Christ successful in His mission on earth

HEB 9:24-28 For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

3. For those involved in Eastern religions and cults

  1. As to beliefs in common in Eastern religions

—God distinct from creation and not a part of everything

GEN 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

—God and Christ not created, but always existent

JOH 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

—God not a part of a human being until there is faith in Christ

ROM 3:22-23 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

b. For those involved in Transcendental Meditation

—Ignorance of God, not self, the problem of humanity

ROM 3:9-12 What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”

—Happiness arising from serving God, not from mindlessness

MAT 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

MAT 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

c. For those involved with Krishna Consciousness

—People born as human beings with only one life on earth; not reincarnated

HEB 9:27 Man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.

JOH 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out–those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

—Jesus a blameless and perfect Savior

HEB 7:26-27 Such a high priest meets our need–one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

HEB 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.
