God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)

One of the great lessons of church history is that God has used theological controversy to corporately sanctify His church as each Christian “contends earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Many crucial doctrines have been clarified and purified through respectful debate in the hermeneutical context of the universal church. Indeed, this is the very reason why God allowed controversy in the church at Corinth: “For there must also be factions (opinions) among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you” (1 Cor. 11:19). Yet to avoid the disunity of the Corinthian church, we must handle our opinions with abundant humility and grace.

What may we observe about deacons in Acts 6:1-7? 1. Their work was practical in nature. 2. Their name also denotes the practical nature of their work. They are servants. But practical work is spiritual work when done for Christ and the kingdom. 3. Their objective was to relieve the elders (originally the apostles) for the ministry of the Word, prayer, and oversight of the church. 4. They were to be accountable to the Elders (“whom we may put in charge”). 5. Their work was assigned and was not related to decision-making for the church as a whole. 6. Some deacons were also gifted in other areas of ministry and were at liberty to use their gifts. Stephen and Phillip, for instance, were deacons who also had other gifting. As deacons, however, they functioned in a practical way. Deacons are not limited to practical service, but must be engaged in practical service to be deacons.

For those of you who like fudge and do not like the mess and fuss of
boiling the chocolate down and checking the temp., etc., you will love
this recipe for 5-minute fudge. (I learned this at a Tupperware party
about 2-3 years ago). My family loves it. Mix sugar and coca together
thoroughly in large microwavable bowl. Pour milk in sugar mixture but
do not mix. Set the stick of margarine right on top of the mixture.
Microwave on high for 2 1/2 minutes. After the mixture comes out of
the microwave, mix well and add vanilla. If it seems to dry this is
when you would add the extra milk if needed. (However, if it is not
too dry do not add extra milk as it will become to thin and it will
not solidify. If for some reason you do add too much milk and it gets
too runny then you can use the mixture on top of ice cream.) At this
point you can add nuts or whatever else you like in your fudge. Put
the fudge out on a plate that is covered with aluminum foil. Put in
the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes. It will solidify pretty quickly.
