It was Mr. Spurgeon, I believe, who used to say to young men – “If you can do anything else do it. If you can stay out of the ministry, stay out of the ministry.” I would certainly say that without any hesitation whatsoever. I would say that the only man who is called to preach is the man who cannot do anything else, in the sense that he is not satisfied with anything else. This call to preach is so put upon him, and such pressure comes to bear upon him that he says, “I can do nothing else, I must preach.”

So when we call pain a problem, we claim we do not deserve it. We are even prepared to scuttle God to maintain our own innocence. We will say that God is not able to do what He would like, or He would never permit persons such as ourselves to suffer. That puffs up our egos and soothes our griefs at the same time. “How could God do this to me?” is at once an admission of pain and a soporific for it. It reduces our personal grief by eradicating the deity. Drastic medicine, indeed, that only a human ego, run wild, could possibly imagine.

Cherry Parfait Pie

INGREDIENTS

1	pk	Cherry gelatin powder
1 3/4	c	Boiling water
3/4	c	Cherry preserves
3	tb	Lemon juice
1/2	c	Evaporated milk (White House); chilled *
9		Inch baked pie shell

INSTRUCTIONS

Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Chill until syrupy. Beat until foamy and
light. Add preserves. Add lemon juice to milk. Beat until thick and fluffy.
Add to whipped gelatin; turn into baked pie shell. Chill until set.
Decorate with whipped cream and fresh or canned cherries, if desired. *
