These have been in my family for gobs of years. Mail well mom mailed to me
when I was stationed in the old Fereral Republic of Germany(FRG) now known
as just Germany.
Sift together flour, salt, soda and spices(all measurements are prior to
sifting), Set aside.
Cream shortening & sugar. Add eggs and molasses. Slowly blend in sifted
flour mixture.
Chill dough at least 3 hors. Roll into walni=ut sized balls and dip into
small bowl(custard bowl works well) with sugar. Place sugar side up about
3 inches apart on Greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle 2-3 drops of water on each
cookie.
Bake in pre-heated 375F oven for 10-12 min.(I have a gas oven and it takes
about 8 minutes so be careful of the time. The bottoms scorch easily)
Makes about 4 dozen.
