We Love God!

God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)

A holy man will…endeavor to set his affections entirely on things above, and to hold things on earth with a very loose hand. He will not neglect the business of the life that now is; but the first place in his mind and thoughts will be given to the life to come. He will aim to live like one whose treasure is in heaven, and to pass through this world like a stranger and pilgrim traveling to his home.
J.C. Ryle

What elevates the human soul and empowers it to live in the fullness of its created purpose is not religious intimidation or new rules or an anxiety induced by spiritual scoldings. It is faith in the promise that the enjoyment sin brings is fleeting and futile, but at God’s right hand, and in the presence of His radiant glory, are pleasures evermore (Ps. 16:11).

The Names Of God

Part 0

Introduction

From *Theology* Conference On THE WORD BBS South Australia

From: BRIAN JENNINGS
Subject: NAMES OF GOD

Genesis ch1v1: In the beginning GOD…. Let’s start the year off with where the Bible starts, with God, and stand in awe of Him. We need to get away from the contentious and stirring subjects, and texts and thoughts from people who have left God out of their lives. The Bible can be taken literally and is a more positive and trustworthy word than the very friends words spoken in friendship.

God can be trusted and has proven Himself reliable. Let’s open up a subject on the names of God and how they apply to us today. The ultimate end of this will be a revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ. I will not start with any subject matter today but will wait to see a response while preparing some material myself.

I encourage Carol Duggins to start the ball rolling if she can with her personal study and I will add to her studies with my own personal study.

There is a wealth of information available so let’s start with the first way that God introduces Himself as “ELOHIM”. Happy studying… B.J.

Subj: NAMES OF GOD

To try and encourage study into the names of God I will use a study guide by Dick Purnell ….. Knowing GOD By His Names: A 31-Day Experiment.

I will not use the full booklet, just the 31-day study guideline. There is more in the book and can recommend it and the rest in the series. Before starting though, I will give a definition of “NAME” from Baker’s Dictionary of Theology:

NAME: When scripture employs the term “name of God”, it follows generally the use of the word as applied to men. “God condescends to us in order that we might ascend to Him” (Augustine). The parallel is not complete, however, because of the difference between sinful and imperfect man and the holy and perfect God (Luke ch1v49). A person, for instance, may be called “Mr. Free King,” though he may be neither free nor king, while our Lord is truly and fully what His name denotes, e.g., Jesus, i.e., Saviour. In general, the biblical use of the name for God may be divided into three categories, though there remain some cases that require more special classification.

First: The term “name” stands for God Himself. Thus, “to call on the name of the Lord” (Acts ch2v21) means to call on the Lord Himself. The same is true of such expressions as “to trust in His name” (Matthew ch12v21); “to blaspheme His name” (Revelation ch13v6). To bow the knee “at the name of Jesus” means to bow before Jesus Himself (Philippians ch2v10).

Second: The term “name” with the Greek preposition [en] or [epi] and the dative means “in the power” or “by the authority of”. Thus, “to cast out devils [en to onomati Iesou]” means to cast out the devils by the power or the authority of Jesus (Mark ch9v38). The same is true of such expressions as: “to be baptized [epi to onomati Iesou Christou]” (Acts ch2v38); “to receive such a little one [epi to onomati mou]” (Matthew ch18v6).

Third: The term “name” with the preposition [eis] and the accusative denotes either “into”, (so that, for example, one baptized into the name of the triune God has communion with Him (Matthew ch28v19; 1Corinthians ch13, 15)); or simply “in”: “to believe in the name” (John ch1v12). GUIDELINES FOR STUDY ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

  1. PREPARATION FOR EACH DAY
    1. Tools: Bible and pen to record your thoughts and plans in this study
    2. Time: Choose a specific half-hour to spend with the Lord. Pick the time of day that is best for you when you are most alert. The goal is to focus your full attention on Christ.
    3. Place: Find a particular spot where you can get alone with the Heavenly Father. Try to limit distractions.
  2. READ – 20 Minutes
    1. Pray earnestly before you begin, and ask the Holy Spirit for His guidance.
    2. Read the entire passage.
    3. Read it again, looking for important ideas.
    4. Write down the following:
      1. Sections A and B – Study the passage thoroughly to answer the questions. Focus your attention on the attributes and actions of our Lord. The more you know about Him, the more you will be able to trust Him to work in and through your life.
      2. Section C – Write out your personal responses and specifically apply to your life the lessons you have learned.
    5. Meditate on significant verses in the passage. Choose and copy one

onto a 7.5cm x 12.5cm card and read it several times during the day. Think about its meaning and impact on your life. Memorize it when you have idle time.

  3. DEED – 5 Minutes
    1. Plan one unselfish action to help another person during that day. This may or may not relate to the particular passage you have just studied.
    2. Seek opportunities that day to reach out to someone with the powerful love of the Lord Jesus Christ. Be a servant. Someone has said, “Behind every face there is a drama going on” – tap into at least one person’s drama.
    3. Here are some suggestions as to what you could do to help someone:-
      1. Cook a meal for a disabled person.
      2. Take care of someone’s children.
      3. Help a student do homework.
      4. Do yard work for someone.
      5. Write an encouraging letter.
      6. Share your faith in God.
      7. Start a Bible study.
      8. Teach a sports activity or a mechanical skill.
      9. Assist in moving household possessions.
      10. Wash someone’s car.
      11. Fix something.
      12. Say kind words to a cranky person.
      13. Give and honest compliment.
      14. Pray with someone in need.
      15. Contribute money.
      16. Visit someone in the hospital or at a retirement home.
    4. Later, record the details of how the Holy Spirit used you that day.

This will increase your confidence to minister to others. Don’t allow pride to spoil the joy of giving. Thank the Lord Jesus for expressing His love and compassion to others through you.

  4. NEED – 5 Minutes
    1. Ask Christ for insight into your life.
    2. Determine what is your most pressing personal need that day. It may be the same as on the previous day, or it may be a different one.
    3. Write down your request. Be specific. The more specific you are, the more specific the answer will be.
    4. Pray earnestly for Almighty God’s provision. Trust Him for big things.
    5. Record the date the Heavenly Father solves your need and how He does it. Periodically review the Good Shepherd’s provisions, and thank Him often for His faithfulness. This will greatly increase your faith.
  5. LAST THING IN THE EVENING
    1. READ the passage again, looking for additional ideas about Jehovah’s character.
    2. Record your accomplishments of the DEED you planned earlier in the day.
    3. Pray again for your NEED. Thank the Lord that He will answer in His way and in His time. Expect the Spirit of the Living God to strengthen you in your walk with Him.
  6. PARTNERS

Ask a friend or a group of friends to do the Experiment together with you. Pray frequently for one another that you will learn more about the True God and how to live in Him. Encourage one another to be disciplined and faithful in completing the Experiment. Share what you are learning. —————————————————————- This is the introduction to a study covering 31 days of Bible Study. The format is designed for a 60 line page length, so if your printer or set
