USING THE SCRIPTURE UNION METHOD FOR A GROUP STUDY

Between Readings 7 and 8, the Scripture Union method of daily Bible study is explained. This method has been designed to provide a helpful pattern of regular personal reading.

This basic method can also be used effectively in a group.

For each group meeting, select a Bible passage which fits in with the FOOTHOLD themes. (see the entry after Reading 49)

Then follow these steps.

  1. PRAY TOGETHER before reading the passages for consideration.
  2. READ through the passage aloud in your group. Some members of your group will prefer NOT to read aloud, so be sure to ask for volunteers. To feel the sense of the passage read in paragraph blocks, not in verses.
  3. THINK about what you have read. Allow time for group members to work alone silently or in pairs. Ask people to make brief notes on the passage each of these under these three headings.
    1. SETTING Who were the original readers or listeners? What, in a simple sentence, was the basic message of this passage to them?
    2. GOD What does this passage teach about God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit?
    3. What does it teach about life for us today? Is the passage a command, a promise or a warning? Is there an example to follow or an error to avoid?
  4. SHARE in your group the thoughts that have come to you. Try to crystallize in simple statements the major lessons to be learned.
  5. PRAY TOGETHER allowing the themes and the lessons in the passage to lead to praise, confession and prayer.
