We Love God!

God: "I looked for someone to take a stand for me, and stand in the gap" (Ezekiel 22:30)

Worship should lead to greater understanding of theological truth. If we contrast the theological depth of the prose hymn in Colossians 1:15-20 with examples from modern praise choruses, we can see more clearly how trivial and insubstantial some of what we sing in our worship is.

GUIDE TO DAILY BIBLE READING

A method to use:

Scripture Union – the publisher of FOOTHOLD – is a world wide family of people who read the Bible, God’s message to the world.

Over the years a method has been designed to provide a helpful pattern for regular Bible reading.

As you use FOOTHOLD you will gradually learn the rhythm of this method.

Our aim is to grow in our knowledge of God which leads to loving and obeying him. It is God who inspired this book and it is God who makes its message live today. FIVE SIMPLE STEPS PRAY Before you read the selected Bible passage, ask God the Holy Spirit to help you understand and respond to what you read. Use the prayer suggested or learn Psalm 119:18 as a prayer. READ Carefully read the passage, expecting God to speak to you. Refer to the preceding and following sections as necessary, so that you read in context. THINK Probe the meaning of the passage. Try to determine what its teaching meant to the original hearers then think about its message for today. The questions on page 3 [How to use Foothold, FTHOLD-1.TXT] will be helpful, and page 84 [How to read and apply the Bible, FTHOLD-F.TXT] gives a useful summary of the tools for interpreting the Bible. Write down your thoughts for later review. FOCUS After you have explored the passage by yourself read the comments prepared by Scripture Union’s writers. Their ideas may help you focus your own impressions or may help answer your questions. PRAY Use the reading as a basis for praise, confession, prayer and action. ==========
