Islam: Definitions

  • Islam: name of religion
  • Muslim: a follower of Islam
  • Quran (or Koran): collection of recitations and revelations
  • Sarah: divisions (chapters) of the Koran – there are 114 revelations in the Koran
  • Hadith: collection of traditions, customs that provide sense of social/political structure
  • Caliph: leader of Islam (immediate successors of Muhammed)
  • Ayatollah: spiritual master/leader
  • Shahada: confession of the Muslim which states ‘There is no god but Allah, and Muhammed is the prophet of Allah.’
  • Muhammed: born in Mecca 570 – 632 AD and claimed to be a prophet sent to restore true religion.
  • Accepted Scriptures:
    • Law of Moses
    • Psalms of David
    • Injil: gospel of Jesus Christ
    • Koran – which supersedes all other scriptures
