Scientology: Background

  • Religious movement based on the writings of Ron Hubbard (1911-1986?)
  • Book: ‘Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health’
  • Dianetics: a form of counseling to curing emotional and psychosomatic illnesses and enhancing life.
  • Subjects are trained by auditors (counselors) to increase power of the analytical (conscious) mind and subdue influence of ‘engrams’ (powerful expressions of past experiences) that confuse the ‘reactive’ or unconscious mind.
  • ‘Science of Survival’ published in 1951 explained the religious philosophy of Scientology. It states that:
    • Human beings are immortal spirits called ‘thetans’ who should practice a ritual known as ‘auditing’, the purpose of which is to free the ‘thetan’ from past painful experiences, making possible increased spiritual awareness and abilities.
    • A device called an E-meter is used to guide the auditing experience.
  • Headquarters: Los Angeles
  • 2 – 3 million members today including famous entertainers: Lou Rawls, John Travolta
  • ‘Psychology Today’ (professional psychology journal) has called Scientology psychologically dangerous.
