Christian Science: History

  • 1875 Mary publishes of ‘Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures’
    • moves from Stoughtan, MA to Lynn, MA, begins teaching her writings. Later moves from Lynn to Boston due to a student revolt.
  • 1877 Mary marries Asa G. Eddy, who later, dies of coronary thrombosis
    • Mary contests cause of death and demands an autopsy, contradicting her own advice regarding use of doctors.
    • Dr. C.J. Eastman (Mary’s choice) confirms her assertion that he died of ‘arsenic poisoning mentally administered.’
    • Dr. Eastman, Dean of Bellvue Medical College was later discovered to have no medical credentials, and was sentenced to prison for 10 years for having operated an abortion clinic.
  • 1879 Mary founds the Church of Christ, Scientist
  • 1881 Mary opens ‘The Metaphysical College’ in Boston
    • Mary teaches over 400 students @$300/student a course lasting about 1/2 college semester in spite of never attaining scholarship in theology, philosophy, history, ancient languages, etc.
